God is light. By ‘walking in the light’ he means living up to what God shows us in His holy disclosures of His will. These verses are not ‘evangelistic’ verses. John is challenging Christian people to be in fellowship with God. He is not querying anyone’s salvation (as 2:12–14 makes clear), but confronting his own friends with the need to be in true fellowship with God. It is the responsibility of Christians themselves.
